On behalf of the Concerned Waterways Alliance, a coalition of community-based organisations across southern Victoria, a formal letter has been submitted to the Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, following his re-election. The letter extends congratulations and respectfully calls on the government to demonstrate national leadership in addressing Australia’s escalating water challenges.
The Alliance urges the government to advance critical reforms in four key areas: finalising the National Water Agreement and re-establishing a National Water Commission; creating an independent National Environment Protection Authority; formally recognising and responding to the impacts of declining rainfall in southern Victoria; and engaging directly with affected communities to inform policy.
These priorities reflect the Alliance’s commitment to sustainable water governance, environmental resilience, and the long-term protection of rivers, wetlands, and groundwater systems. The correspondence seeks a renewed national focus on water as a matter of ecological, social, and intergenerational importance.
